‘All paid jobs absorb and degrade the mind.’ ~ Aristotle

Despite the popular success of the Bolsa Família (the state hand-out to mothers whose children go to school instead of staying at home or working), child labour appears alive and well here in the south of the city.

I sometimes feel as if I’ve stumbled onto the set of Bugsy Malone. I saw two boys this week - they couldn’t have been more than 8 years old - head to toe in engine oil as they skilfully directed cars in and out of a local garage, one of them raising a little hand to stop the on-coming traffic to let a car reverse out. Brave little soul. It reminded me of that lousy Benetton ad with the toddler carrying the brick while sporting a $100 woollen pullover.
